Frequently Asked Questions .
When choosing timber for your project it’s important to select the right wood that is suitable for your project. If your project is going to be exposed to the elements, we recommend hardwood timber or softwood that has been pressure treated accordingly. If you are building a fence, choosing wood & timber fence supplies that are not only durable but have specifically cut to ideal sizing for fencing will make your job that much easier. For timber flooring, choosing wood that offers a high-quality finish that is not only durable but has been perfectly dressed will ensure a smooth and seamless finish.

We often get asked what the difference is between Kwila vs Merbau. Both Kwila and merbau timber are common names for a commonly used hardwood timber using in decking and outdoor furniture applications: Intsia spp. (I. bijuga, I. palebanica).
Merbau or Kwila timber has a wide distribution from East Africa to Southeast Asia and Australia primarily from New Guinea and is well sought after for its appearance, texture & colour when a durable outdoor hardwood is needed for a project. Â Â Â
While there is a botanical difference between hardwood and softwood, when it comes to timber, hardwood is, in general, denser and is often used in high-quality furniture, decks, flooring, and construction. Softwood currently makes up approximately 80% of the timber market. It has a lower density and is used in a wide range of applications from buildings components, truss and frame manufacturing, fibreboard and much more.
Â
In should be noted, that while softwood has a lower density, it is often cheaper, can be much more workable and can be extremely durable in certain applications when pressure-treated accordingly.
