How to Restore a Deck

A decking restoration project doesn’t always have to be an ongoing project. They can be as simple as a new oiling deck finish or some new wooden accents like railings or benches. A deck restoration can be started with proper planning and preparation and finished in as little as a weekend. Continue reading to see how to restore a deck that will last you for years to come.

Basic Deck Restoring Procedure

1.    Prep the Surface

Begin the deck restoration process by clearing the surface of all furniture and accessories where applicable. Next, hose off or better yet, pressure wash the surface to remove any old dirt, grime or degrading layers of sealant or stain. Try to avoid using harsh chemicals at this stage due to the timber material being exposed, making it more susceptible to deformation and damage. Sand any rough spots of the surface and remove any large splinters or frayed edges. If wood panels need to be replaced this is the time to do so.

We have a range of Australian hardwood decking materials in a number of sizes. Contact us on 07 3266 9000 for your enquiries.

2.    Coat the Deck in Primer

Add a thick layer of primer to the decking surface to ensure any knot holes, or cracks are sealed and allow time to set until the material has hardened. If necessary, you can go over areas with a handheld paintbrush or thick syringe. Again, further time needs to be allocated to allow for the primer to dry and set before applying any kind of oil or stain deck finish or sealant.
